Fort Dodge Community Schools Foundation Director

Molly Nelson, Fort Dodge Community Schools Foundation Director

Molly Nelson is a proud FDSH alum and Fort Dodge Community Schools (FDCS) Foundation Director. She was named the Foundations first director in October of 2017.

Her love of communication and relationship building started in high school writing for The Little Dodger.

It was a basketball scholarship that took her to Drake University and degrees in Broadcast News and Radio Television Production that spurred a career in visual media and storytelling.

She told stories of snowstorms, breaking news and community events for nearly seven years as a reporter for KCCI. For four years she helped highlight outstanding students, in-demand career training and award winning faculty as the host of the television show Discover DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College).

She is now telling the stories of outstanding students, amazing educators and FDSH alumni accomplishments as the FDCS Foundation Director.

“It’s my goal to make sure that current and future students have the same amazing Dodger experience I had. I love meeting with people and getting the chance to tell them about all of the amazing things happening in the Fort Dodge Community School District."

Gifts from generous donors, the Go Big, Go Dodgers annual fundraiser and business partnerships allow the FDCS Foundation to help educators and students go above and beyond what district funding allows by providing grants for professional development, technology and other educational items.

Nelson is also host of the Weiss-Merkle Financial TV Show, a 30-minute program that airs weekly on KCCI. She does play-by-play for ESPN 3 broadcasts of Drake women’s basketball games and is involved in Young Professionals, Fort Dodge Study Club and Feelhaver Booster Club.

Her husband, Kole Petersen, is also a Dodger alum. The pair can be seen wrangling their four children, including 18-month-old twin daughters; Elya and Etta. You might also catch them cheering or coaching their 8 and 4 year- old sons in youth sports, playing golf together or participating in church activities.
